Will students cheat with AI?
I'm going to say something shocking to some. Ready?
Sometimes students don’t find what we are teaching relevant. So if there is an easy way out to check that box and get a good grade, they will take it.
A student's motivation to cheat is often not because they don’t want to learn but rather grades, balancing of schedules and course loads, etc.
Plus an unbelievable amount of pressure is placed on the students with their grades. In their eyes, and their parents' eyes, it will literally dictate their future and educational opportunities.
I ran into this a lot when I was teaching French. Especially when Google Translate hit the scene. One time I had a student use Google Translate to turn in a project as their own work.
When confronted, I had the parent place the blame on me for not reminding their child not to cheat.
Now I realize this is an extreme case, but the fact of the matter is that it happens. A lot, everywhere.
Looking back I realize that it was the parent’s attempt to protect the student’s future at all costs rather than seeing for what it was.
The student cheated and there are consequences.
But saying this in front of the child to the teacher unfortunately sends the wrong message to the child.
I learned quickly that I cannot control what messages are supported outside of my classroom.
What I can control is how I assess the skills that I am testing.
From that moment on, I decided not to fight Google Translate but to leverage it. I set boundaries where students were able to use the tool, cite it and learn from it. If a student relied too heavily on it, a conversation was merited.
The same must happen with AI.
Because we cannot control outside motivations to cheat nor the messages supported outside the classroom but we can control how we assess.
If it is too easy to cheat, then you really aren’t able to assess what they have learned.
This will require a bit of reflection into your own craft, adjustments to how you assess, and evolve with the needs of the students.
Thankfully we have AI to help us with ideas and inspiration. We have a collaborative community. We can innovate and enhance our own craft with AI.
We don’t have to do this on our own.
We have AI, we have our expertise, and we have each other. The best of all worlds, and a world that is the future of our students.
You got this.
