The AI Parent

Before I give you a list of amazing resources for parents for the AI era, I want to share some exciting news!

In this week's Edtech Insiders newsletter, we spoke to a group of incredible teacher-founders (AKA "teacherpreneurs") about their experiences moving from classrooms to Edtech boardrooms and why "teachers make the best entrepreneurs".

Can you guess the news? You got it, your teacher bestie was featured!

THE AI PARENT

I want to start off with a story that I often tell in my professional development sessions with teachers.

About 7 months ago I was subbing at a school and offered some AI PD to the principal. He accepted but told me that I should really focus on the cheating aspect, because that is what the teachers are most concerned about.

I agreed to cover the topic but then he leaned in and whispered, “I have to tell you a secret. I love ChatGPT myself. I used it to help write my commencement speech last year.”

I told him that he found an awesome use case for the tool then asked him if he shared that with his staff.

THE AUDIBLE GASP AND LOOK OF TERROR THAT CROSSED HIS FACE.

He told me absolutely not. He wouldn’t want his staff knowing that he was in a sense “cheating”.

This got me thinking. Why would he considered this cheating? Is guilt or shame of using a tool to be more efficient an “educator thing”?

I created a poll on LinkedIn to ask that very question. Many teachers responded feeling guilt or shame for using the tool for work (about 80%).

Then someone in my network, a CEO of a company outside of the education industry, commented the following:

“Are you guys nuts? I won’t hire someone who doesn’t know how to leverage AI.”

This was 7 months ago. The workforce is already demanding employees to have some basic understanding on how to leverage AI.

Which means we need to prepare our students, your children, to be successful in this AI infused workforce.

So I have gathered a few amazing resources for you to begin wrapping your head around supporting your child, even the littles, for this AI era.

Enjoy!
