Bringing AI into the English Classroom—Without Losing Student Voice 👀

I recently worked with high school English teachers to integrate generative AI into writing instruction—without sacrificing student originality.

Instead of reinventing the wheel, we adapted existing writing assignments using a structured AI Integration Framework that helps students build AI literacy and fluency while strengthening their writing skills.

💡 How it Works:

🔹 20% Brainstorming with AI – Students explore ideas but make the final decisions.
🔹 40% Independent Writing – No AI allowed, ensuring authentic student work.
🔹 20% AI Feedback – AI provides suggestions only, not direct edits to promote critical thinking.
🔹 20% Revision Using AI Feedback – Students refine their work while maintaining full ownership.

This flexible approach prepares students for an AI-powered future by teaching them how to engage with AI ethically, critically, and effectively.

Even better—the teachers I worked with have agreed to share their work as an example for other educators looking to implement AI into their writing instruction!

Their real-world classroom applications will serve as a valuable model for others exploring how AI can enhance, not replace, student learning.

Full disclaimer: I did not come up with this framework BUT I’ve put together a free resource for educators looking to integrate AI into writing instruction, with access to their example, so you can see exactly how this framework works in action.

This is but one way teachers are integrating AI into their courses.
