5 simple steps add AI Literacy to ANY curriculum

  1. Take a project your students love doing.

You know which project, the one that hits it out of the ballpark every time. The ones students say they loved doing. The one you love teaching.

My thought on selecting an already amazing project is so that the AI activity is complementary to an already solid project and if the AI addition fails, the project still is an effective learning experience.

  1. Let ChatGPT provide inspiration

Keep it simple. This is what I asked ChatGPT:

“I'm going to give you a project prompt that I give my students. Can you give me some ideas for an AI tool activity that complements the project? For each suggestion please cite a tool that is free, easy to use and accessible for students 9-12 grade.“

  1. Insert tried and true project prompt & select activity

Chatgpt will provide a list of ideas, tools and sites. Read through and select the one that works for you and your students and supports the learning objectives.

  1. Allow the students to play.

Play implies having fun and is low risk. Let them try out the tool. Consider making it a requirement but not a graded portion or give points for trying out the tool. I would be upfront with them and share that you too are playing with AI and would love their feedback.

  1. Reflect & Listen

Listen to the feedback. Find out what worked and didn’t work. To what extent did it enhance your learning of the subject and how?

Remember:

  • Keep it simple.

  • Recycle your work.

  • Allow yourself to imagine.

  • Allow the students to play.

  • Allow room for success & failure.

  • Reflect and Adjust.

  • Repeat.

Let me know how it goes!
